John Sarich, Culinary Director
Few chefs enjoy access to a greater bounty of world-class wines and fresh foods than Chateau Ste. Michelle's culinary director John Sarich. "The Pacific Northwest is a chef's paradise," says John. "Not only do we have an outstanding variety of ingredients from land and sea, we also have exceptional local wines from the Columbia Valley where long summer days and crisp autumn nights produce ideal conditions for well-balanced wines." As culinary director for the winery, John travels the globe conducting cooking classes, wine and food tastings, wine dinners, and special events, all designed to further people's enjoyment and understanding of wine and food. In 1980, John founded Seattle's highly acclaimed Adriatica Restaurant and later opened Dalmacija Ristoran in Seattle's Pike Place Market. While at Adriatica, John was selected by Esquire magazine as one of the country's "hot new chefs," and listed by the Seattle Times as one of the city's top five chefs. His first cookbook, John Sarich's Food & Wine of the Pacific Northwest, was published in 1993 and his second book, John Sarich at Chateau Ste. Michelle, was published in the fall of 1997. Both books continue to inspire cooks across the country. Television viewers in select, syndicated markets also enjoy John's renowned approach to casual, easy dining. His lifestyle and cooking show, Best of Taste - Flavors of the Pacific Coast, debuted in September 2000.
Janet Hedstrom, Executive Chef
“Use the best quality ingredients and let the flavors speak for themselves,” is her motto. “In the Pacific Northwest we are fortunate to have access to fresh ingredients throughout much of the year, from Eastern Washington produce to fish and berries from Western Washington. Our menus take advantage of what is fresh locally at the time.” Herbs grown from Janet’s own herb garden on the winery grounds accent many of the winery’s dishes.

Janet joined Chateau Ste. Michelle in 1992. As Executive Chef, Janet manages a culinary staff of fourteen and conducts wine dinners, cooking classes, wine and food tastings, corporate functions and special events, all designed to showcase the magical paring of fresh Northwest ingredients and award-winning Chateau Ste. Michelle wine. “Start with good wine and good food and it’s a lot easier,” says Janet. “I begin with the wine and design my dishes to bring out the best attributes in the wine.”

Janet has traveled throughout Europe and South America discovering cuisine from other cultures. Her travels, years of culinary experience and passion for matching wine and food are reflected in the winery’s unique culinary program.

“For me, the best part of my job is working with winemakers who share the same passion for creating something artistic and celebrating flavors,” says Janet.
