Bright yellow. Nuanced nose combines musky stone and citrus fruits, charred oak and a leesy note. Then broad and generous but not at all overly sweet, with notes of mirabelle and marzipan and a distinctly saline quality. This plump and rather full-bodied chardonnay finishes with good breadth and length. A tad warm on the end but with the chewy middle-palate material to support the alcohol.

The 2008 Ethos Chardonnay is a blend of Horse Heaven, Cold Creek, and Canoe Ridge fruit in which half the wine was native fermented, and all of it was aged sur lie in French oak for 9 months. Light gold in color, it offers up a nose of toasty oak, pear, white peach, and tropical fruits. Round and toasty on the palate, this rich savory effort may well evolve for another 1-2 years and drink well through 2017.

Limited production and special handling make this the prestige Chardonnay offering from the entire Ste. Michelle portfolio. Much of the fruit is from original plantings at the Cold Creek vineyard, and gives the wine depth and resonance. This vintage has had plenty of time to absorb the new oak and integrate the flavors, and is drinking beautifully.

Broad and spicy, with a tangy uplift to the balance, finishing with minerality around the pineapple and pear flavors.
