My favorite of the four here is the 2005 Chardonnay "Ethos," a barrel selection of the best Canoe Ridge and Cold Creek Vineyard fruit. A third of the wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts in 60% new French oak and remained on its lees for eight months. It has the most expressive aromatics, a broad, full-flavored palate, and a smooth texture. It will drink well over the next 3-5 years.

Broad and generous, deftly balanced with juicy acidity, with mineral and tropical fruit flavors galore, lingering on the finish with pleasant hints of gooseberry.'

Wonderfully leesy and complex, the second vintage of the top-of-the-line Ethos Chardonnay has intriguing streaks of orange peel and citrus zest, along with buttered nuts, toast and hazelnut flavors.'

Part of a new reserve tier from Chateau Ste. Michelle, Ethos Chardonnay is rich and broad with caramelized scents of oak. Its rich roasted pear flavors are firm and long, with hints of carament and vanillin that suggest a pairing with seared scallops.'

Bertheau fashioned the terrific 2004 Chardonnay Ethos from three vineyards, Canoe Ridge Estate (55%), Cold Creek (35%), and Wahluke Slope (10%). Aromatically bursting with spices, this medium to full-bodied wine reveals spicy pears in the attack that build in intensity through the mid-palate and then return with a vengeance in its long sappy finish. A highly concentrated white, it is satin-textured, sappy, and wonderfully balanced.'
