The 2008 Chardonnay Canoe Ridge Estate was partially fermented with native yeasts in 50% new French oak. It was aged in barrel for 10 months sur lie with stirring and went through full malolactic. Medium gold-colored, it gives up an attractive bouquet of buttered popcorn, minerals, poached pear, lemon zest, and baking spices. Smooth textured, mouth-filling, and impeccably balanced, this Chardonnay over-delivers for its modest price.

Half of the 2007 Canoe Ridge Estate Chardonnay was fermented with native yeasts in 44% new French oak. It went through malolactic fermentation and was aged for 10 months sur lie. Medium straw-colored, on the nose it offers greater minerality and less tropical/fruity notes than the Indian Wells cuvee. On the palate it exhibits an elegant, more tightly wound personality with notes of butterscotch and baking spices emerging from this impeccably balanced effort. It will drink well over the next 5-6 years.

Lithe and refreshing, this brims with lemony pear and floral flavors, picking up a stony note as the finish rolls on.

Though not quite up to the exuberant, ultra-ripe flavors of the 2005 Canoe Ridge Estate Chardonnay, the sleeker, more acidic 2006 is a fine effort. Firm and textural, with excellent concentration, its fruit flavors are lean and appley, with a hint of green banana. Balanced and tight, this is one Chardonnay that should probably be cellared for a few more years.

The Chardonnays start with the 2006 Chardonnay Canoe Ridge Estate, made in a fruit-forward style. The wine was aged in 36% new oak and was bottled unfiltered. The nose offers toasty notes, white fruits, pear, and peach. This leads to a round, ripe wine with excellent texture and nicely integrated oak. The finish is lengthy and fruit-filled. This nicely priced wine can be enjoyed now and over the next 3 years.
