92 points The Wine Advocate - July 1, 2008
The 2005 Artist Series Meritage is composed of 57% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec. Opaque purple-colored, the expressive bouquet jumps from the glass with notes of toasty oak, earth, blueberry, and black cherry jam. Supple, ripe, and layered on the palate, the wine has excellent depth and concentration and enough stuffing to evolve for 3-5 years. This classy wine should be at its best from 2012 to 2025.
92 points The Wine Advocate - September 1, 2007
The 2004 Meritage Artist Series is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 11% Malbec, and 4% Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in 73% new oak. Purple-colored, it has a Bordeaux-like nose of pencil lead, scorched earth, espresso roast, black currant, and blackberry. This leads to a structured wine with a supple texture, layers of spicy flavors, plenty of complexity, and a 45+ second finish. It will evolve for 6-8 years and drink well through 2034.
90 points - “(Washington) Recommended Producers and Selected Wines” Wine Spectator - May 15, 2007
The flagship winery of Washington's largest wine company makes a range of Cabernets, all in a fruit-forward style that builds on a firm, tannic structure.
1 grape clusters - “Recommended” Northwest Palate - October 1, 2006
Toast, caramel, and cedar aromas accent a core of plum fruitiness in the nose, while on the tongue, juicy berry and plum fruit offer a medium-bodied, straightforward mouthful. Drink with a vegetarian lasagna
Wine Press Northwest - June 20, 2006
They turned to stone for this year’s Artist Series label, featuring Will Robinson’s Shield Warrior" green granite sculpture. The wine’s nose broadcasts forest notes reminiscent of Mount Rainer’s Grove of the Pariarchs and Heinz Blend pipe tobacco. There’s plum in the background of the nose, and the structure will punch you in the mouth. Blueberries join the plums on the palate with rich mouthfeel. It was a serious first vintage for Bob Bertheau, with tannins wound so tight the fruit hits you like a fist. This should be really interesting in three.
