Last tasted by me in its finished blend shortly before bottling, Ste Michelle’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Vineyard combines plushness of texture and depth of flavor (dark berries, tobacco, chocolate) with welcome vivacity and saliva-inducing salinity. It should offer fine value over the next half dozen or more years.

Representing the latest in a series of bottlings that offers a barrel selection, nearly always overwhelmingly from Canoe Ridge and/or Cold Creek (though lots from contract growers always remain in the running) the Ste. Michelle 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Ethos displays forward, confitured cherry reinforced by nougat and chocolate, in keeping with Bertheau’s description of this project as “intended to make more of a New World Statement” when compared with the similarly barrel-selected Meritage. (The barrels were all new.) This is flatteringly polished, plush and expansive, the trade-off for the aforementioned virtues – at least in this vintage – being slightly less complexity and less primary juiciness or savor to the nevertheless long finish. Still, this holds lots of appeal – more or less, depending on one’s preferred style – and should perform well for several years.

With polished texture from resolved tannins and plenty of still-juicy dark berry fruit, the Ste Michelle’s 2006 Meritage Artist Series is noteworthy and winsome for its saliva-drawing sense of salinity allied to a savory amalgam of mocha, nuts, cardamom and blond tobacco. The performance here reflects the vintage’s moderate temperatures that permitted of even, shut-down-free ripeness, and finishes with at once soothing and saliva- not to mention next sip-stimulating length. I suspect this is at its best now but will still perform admirably for at least 2-3 more years.

Displaying some of the high-toned sassafras and floral essences found in the corresponding Canoe Ridge Merlot bottling, Ste Michelle’s 2008 Meritage Artist Series is sappy and pungent; berry-sweet in ripeness; and finely-tannic in feel. With cut, vibrancy, as well as invigorating piquancy and pungency, this finishes strongly and promises to be well worth following for at least the better part of a half dozen more years.

Sandalwood, vanilla, nutmeg, tobacco and ripe dark berries make for an alluring aromatic display in Ste Michelle’s 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Vineyard and inform a broad, satiny palate with carob and dark chocolate undertones. Like other of the best 2008s – and in keeping with others from Ste Michelle, this retains delightful freshness of berry juiciness and introduces a saliva-inducing salinity to its sustained finish such as you’ll find too seldom in a big-bodied North American Cabernet, much less one at this price. Plan to enjoy this outstanding value over the nest 6-8 years.
