Displaying some of the high-toned sassafras and floral essences found in the corresponding Canoe Ridge Merlot bottling, Ste Michelle’s 2008 Meritage Artist Series is sappy and pungent; berry-sweet in ripeness; and finely-tannic in feel. With cut, vibrancy, as well as invigorating piquancy and pungency, this finishes strongly and promises to be well worth following for at least the better part of a half dozen more years.

Sandalwood, vanilla, nutmeg, tobacco and ripe dark berries make for an alluring aromatic display in Ste Michelle’s 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Cold Creek Vineyard and inform a broad, satiny palate with carob and dark chocolate undertones. Like other of the best 2008s – and in keeping with others from Ste Michelle, this retains delightful freshness of berry juiciness and introduces a saliva-inducing salinity to its sustained finish such as you’ll find too seldom in a big-bodied North American Cabernet, much less one at this price. Plan to enjoy this outstanding value over the nest 6-8 years.

Scents of dark plum and cherry are joined by herbal high tones, smoky black tea, as well as suggestions of sea breeze in Ste Michelle’s 2007 Merlot Cold Creek Vineyard, all anticipating a juicy, bittersweet, faintly medicinal pit- and salt-tinged palate impression. With a flatteringly polished feel and next-sip compelling combination of primary fruit juiciness; herbal pungency; and salinity, this finishes with aplomb and promises to drink well for another several years.

With a blend similar to that of its 2009 counterpart and slightly lower 15% alcohol, the Ste Michelle 2008 Merlot Cold Creek Vineyard delivers much more primary juiciness of dark betters, cut, and focus. It’s still however possessed of relatively rustic tannin when compared with the polish of the corresponding Canoe Ridge bottlings. (To give you an idea of this site’s efficacy with Merlot, Bertheau says the Cabernet Sauvignon that’s blended in actually serves to soften the finished blend!) Green tea and bitter dark chocolate offer interestingly contrasting accents and the finish here is impressively persistent and heat-free. Look for at least 3-4 more years of satisfaction from this fine value.
