Ste Michelle’s 2009 Meritage Artist Series is richer than its 2010 counterpart and more seamlessly ripe and sweet as well. But it also harbors some slightly drying tannin and lacks the sense of levity or primary juiciness than possessed by the 2010 – for all of my reservations about it – not to mention the 2009 Canoe Ridge Merlot. Licorice, chocolate, and tar mingle with cherry and cassis in a satisfyingly persistent finish. Look for at least 3-4 years of high performance here, though my intuition is not to expect noticeable improvement with bottle age.

With polished texture from resolved tannins and plenty of still-juicy dark berry fruit, the Ste Michelle’s 2006 Meritage Artist Series is noteworthy and winsome for its saliva-drawing sense of salinity allied to a savory amalgam of mocha, nuts, cardamom and blond tobacco. The performance here reflects the vintage’s moderate temperatures that permitted of even, shut-down-free ripeness, and finishes with at once soothing and saliva- not to mention next sip-stimulating length. I suspect this is at its best now but will still perform admirably for at least 2-3 more years.

Displaying some of the high-toned sassafras and floral essences found in the corresponding Canoe Ridge Merlot bottling, Ste Michelle’s 2008 Meritage Artist Series is sappy and pungent; berry-sweet in ripeness; and finely-tannic in feel. With cut, vibrancy, as well as invigorating piquancy and pungency, this finishes strongly and promises to be well worth following for at least the better part of a half dozen more years.

Five of the Bordeaux grapes were used in this wine, and two-thirds of the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of the grapes came from the excellent Canoe Ridge Estate Vineyard, and the rest were sourced from Cold Creek Vineyard. Dark, saturated flavors of black cherry and cassis are balanced against ripe, firm tannins. It’s full bodied and flavorful, and it displays plenty of power.

This is a big, bold, Bordeaux-style blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) and Merlot (27%). Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot round out the blend. Polished tannins and sweet dark fruit make it lovely for current consumption especially with a fire-grilled steak.
