The 2007 Artist Series Meritage is composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and the balance Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec aged for 20 months in 88% new French and American oak. According to veteran winemaker Bob Bertheau, they are “?looking for more elegance and more layers.” Opaque purple-colored, it puts out a nose of pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, and assorted black fruits. Savory and structured but lacking the volume and breadth of the Ethos Cabernet Sauvignon, it is nevertheless an outstanding effort that will evolve for several years and drink well through its 20th birthday.

Firm, focused and generous with its ripe currant, plum and spice flavors, picking up a green tobacco note as the finish persists against refined tannins.

The Artist Series blend is quite Cabernet-centric in 2006—58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Malbec and just a splash of Petit Verdot. Aromatic and loaded with sweet blackberry fruit, backed with black olive and clean earth, this polished effort shows excellent midpalate concentration and a nicely sculpted finish.

Here in Washington, artist labels are proliferating, but three of the first remain best of class: "... a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and petit verdot — is loaded with sweet blackberry fruit, backed with black olive and clean, polished tannins..."

The 2006 Artist Series Meritage was sourced from Cold Creek, Canoe Ridge, and Wahluke Slope. This predominantly Merlot-Cabernet blend was aged for 20 months in mostly French oak. Purple-colored, it has an attractive nose of cedar, cinnamon, allspice, violets, black cherry, and black currant. Dense, ripe, and structured, this solid effort will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring and offer pleasure from 2013 to 2026.
