Bright ruby. Pure but reticent aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice, clove oil and tropical dark chocolate. Sweet, pliant and seamless, with concentrated dark berry, floral and licorice flavors dominating. Not a meaty or extravagant style of syrah, but dense and fine-grained. I like the oak treatment here (all new French and American barriques for 20 months). Finishes with smooth tannins. Enjoy this now or hold it for more complexity.

It is so dark it will make your lips look bruised, and so densely flavored your taste buds will start to buzz. Layered on top of Syrah’s expected red and black fruit flavors are intriguing notes of smoke and a deep, grainy-syrupy (but not sweet) hint of molasses. Although Ethos seems ideally suited for complex meaty fare such as beef stews and the like, someone served it to me recently with rotisserie chicken. Somewhat to my surprise, the wine pretty much held its own with the bird--which was, admittedly, a very nicely seasoned and roasted morsel of fowl. But had the wine truly overpowered the dish, I might have simply pushed the chicken aside and continued lapping up the scrumptious Syrah.
4 stars Wine Peeps - October 17, 2011
Dark purplish red in color. Nice nose with espresso bean and blackberry aromas. Black fruit, espresso, and dust come through on the palate. Full-bodied and lively with medium to high tannins. Well-balanced with good complexity and a long, lingering finish. 4 stars (out of 5). 4 bangs for your buck (out of 5)

The 2008 Ethos Syrah spent 20 months in 63% new French and American oak. Dense purple-colored, it delivers inviting aromas of smoked meat, hung game, pepper, tapenade, blueberry, and blackberry. Plush on the palate with a velvety texture, it is long on rich flavor but short on complexity. It has the stuffing to evolve for a few years so perhaps that will emerge with additional bottle age.

Distinctive for its flavor profile, which features a layer of minerality running through the cherry and black pepper flavors. A hint of bitterness needs to soften on the finish.
