Red-ruby. Cassis, licorice and chocolate mint on the nose; not quite as broad or expressive as the Cold Creek example. In a tighter, cooler style on the palate, showing less detail and nuance today. A bit more chunky and less refined too, but there's no shortage of material here. Finishes with dusty tannins that will require time in bottle to soften.

This opaque and dark purple colored Merlot was the winner of our big blind tasting of mid-tier Merlots. It opens with an attractive black cherry and blueberry bouquet with a touch of oak and leather. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, and silky. The flavor profile is a tasty plum with notes of black cherry. The panel also detected hints of cinnamon and coffee which added to its complexity. The finish is dry and its moderate tannins are sticky and nicely prolonged. The panel suggested pairing this tasty Merlot with a New York strip steak or blackened tuna.

The purple-colored 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Canoe Ridge Estate was aged for 22 months in 60% new French and American oak. Enticing aromas of Asian spices, incense, violets, tobacco, blackberry, and plum lead to a savory, structured wine with excellent volume and depth. It has the structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will drink well through 2020.
