Bold plum and black cherry nose - very fruity. Rich and juicy, plump and velvety, this offers a big, luxurioius style but it's not overbearing. Long, toasty finish. Dring 2013 - 2020

Made in fairly modest quantities, this Merlot bears dark fruit that shows a pleasing, dusty quality. The blend includes 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, which keeps it in the Bordeaux-style camp. Firm and concentrated, it finishes with a tasty mix of cocoa, coffee grounds and Asian spices.

Good Merlot wines, like this one, should deliver at least a hint of leafy slightly funky notes that offset the ripe fruit flavors. Bob Bertheau’s team at Chateau Ste. Michelle has managed to balance the fruit, herbal nuances and oak so nothing dominates while conveying what I call “not just fruit” flavors. Unlike many Merlots, it finishes slightly bitter, not sweet.

This shows off the great strengths of the vineyard and the AVA. Dark, dusty fruit is firm and concentrated, and finishes with a tasty mix of cocoa, coffee grounds and Asian spice.
