50th Anniversary

Washington State’s Founding Winery

Fifty years ago, a tiny winery called Ste. Michelle Vineyards introduced its first vintage of European-style premium wine. It was the release that inspired today’s thriving Washington wine industry—now home to nearly 1,000 wineries and 14 AVAs.

Let’s raise a glass to the first five decades of our story. But only as a motivation to produce even more remarkable Chateau Ste. Michelle wine experiences in the next half-century.

Cheers. The best is yet to come.

Washington Wines: Aging Very Well

In those early days, few people recognized or understood the region’s potential.

“Wine from Washington?” sniffed one east coast critic. “What side of the Potomac do the grapes grow on?” Fifty years later, no one gets the joke. Washington is now the nation’s #2 producer of premium wine with more than 50,000 planted acres.

Led by Chateau Ste. Michelle, Washington wines have won international acclaim and the state now stands shoulder-to-shoulder with world’s great wine producing regions.

The Chateau itself has received a long list of awards including 22 “Winery of The Year” honors (Wine & Spirits) and 18 “Top 100 Wines” designations (Wine Spectator). Our landmark winery in Woodinville also happens to be one of the most popular destination wineries in the world. What’s more, some of the world’s most celebrated vintners have come to Washington to partner with Chateau Ste. Michelle to create remarkable wines. These include the Antinori Family (Col Solare), Dr. Loosen (Eroica), and Michel Gassier and Philippe Cambie (Tenet).

Uncorking The Future

While all the recognition is flattering, Chateau Ste. Michelle doesn’t spend a lot of time polishing its medals. Our goal is to continue to blend experience, innovation and education in order to create exceptional wine experiences for people around the world.
