Winemaker Bob Bertheau discusses the 2008 Artist Series Meritage
Columbia Valley. “Artist Series is the ultimate sculpted wine created by blending amazing Washington fruit. For the first time, the Artist Series blend includes all five Bordeaux grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Merlot (36%), Cabernet Franc (6%), Malbec (6%), and Petit Verdot (1%). The result is a multi-layered, complex and harmonious wine. Nearly all of the fruit came from our estate vineyards.”

2008 Boreal Red Wine, Columbia Valley.
“2008 was a bit cooler than normal, making for more elegant and classically structured wines, which is perfect for this style of Syrah. Using classic Northern Rhone clones and about 7% Viognier really brings out the old world characteristics of Syrah - dried thyme and lavender, violets and rose petals, and underneath all of that spice and herb is the vibrant red fruit - cherries and blackberries. A more sophisticated and feminine expression of Syrah than we normally see in the new world, and a wonderful accompaniment to traditional autumn fare, such as ratatouille and Roasted Pork Loin.”
Bob Bertheau, Winemaker
Retail: $30.00 | Club Members: $24.00

This year we broke two records at the VRC appreciation events. The first was attendance, as over 6,500 members were at either the 1964 event on Saturday or Kat Edmonson on Sunday. The second was raising over $12,000 for Washington Wine Education supporting the Wine Science Center, thanks to our VRC members' excellent skills and generosity at the ring toss! These events are a year in the planning and take over 80 Chateau Ste. Michelle Staff members to pull off. We are already looking at what we will do for next year.

I thought I would take this opportunity to remind you of some guidelines, rules and just general information surrounding our Summer Concert Series:

  • There is a $5.00 parking fee on concert days starting at approximately 1:00 pm. If you are coming to the winery after that time, you will be charged $5.00 regardless whether or not you are attending a show. However, you will receive a parking stub and if you leave the property before 5:00 pm, your parking fee will be refunded. The Wine Shop tasting bar closes at 4:30 pm on concert days.
  • The last opportunity to pick up your release wine is at 4:30pm. VRC member tastings end at 4:00pm.
  • The last public tour on concert days will be at 3:30 pm.
  • Last Library Tasting appointment on concert days is at 2:00 pm.
  • Cameras are not permitted at concerts.
  • No alcohol or wine (unless purchased at the winery on the day of show) will be permitted on the concert field.
  • You cannot drop off your chairs and leave the property, as your chair can be removed from line. If you come early to sit in line, you need to stay with your belongings. If you are going on a tour or tasting, let people around you know so security can be advised that you will be returning shortly.
  • Umbrellas are not allowed up during concerts as they obstruct the view of other concert attendees. For rain, waterproof ponchos are recommended.
  • High-back chairs are only allowed in our designated high-back chair area.
  • The Wine Shop will close after the first intermission or approximately at 8:00 pm.

Chateau Ste. Michelle celebrates the release of our 2008 Artist Series Meritage featuring artist Cara Barer

Butterfly by Cara Barer The 2008 Artist Series Meritage commemorates the 16th vintage in the Artist Series collection, which debuted with the 1993 vintage, featuring the work of famed glass master Dale Chihuly. The 2008 vintage marks the first time the Artist Series blend includes all five Bordeaux grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

About the Artist:
Through chance and experimentation with curling irons, clothes pins and water, Cara Barer transforms volumes of outdated information such as a common reference book into intricately coiled, crumpled objects of beauty and photographs the outcome. A random encounter with discarded Houston Yellow Pages was the primary inspiration for this on-going journey.

“The way we choose to research and find information is in an evolution. I hope to raise questions about these changes, the ephemeral and fragile nature in which we now obtain knowledge and the future of books.” - Cara Barer

Be WOW'd!
Once a year we close our winery early (at 1:00pm) to donate the use of the grounds for a major fund-raiser, the Auction of Washington Wines. In its twenty-three year history over $24.5 million has been raised and the event is considered one of the top charity wine events in the country.

Funds donated go towards the uncompensated care program for patients at Seattle Children’s to ensure all children in our region receive the best medical care available regardless of the family’s ability to pay. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Washington Wine Education Foundation, founded in 2001 to support viticulture and enology education in our state.

The Auction of Washington Wines is a three day event with something for everyone, come celebrate the wines of Washington!

2007 Cold Creek Vineyard Merlot, Columbia Valley
94 pts & Cellar Selection - Wine Enthusiast (7/1/11)
A full-throttle effort, with big flavor swashes of blackberry, cassis, black pepper, coffee grounds and ripe tannins. This is Cold Creek Merlot at its most powerful; the 35-year-old vines are in their prime and the flavors show it. Few American Merlots-indeed few in the world-can stand on their own and deliver a wine this complete and powerful. It needs more years to knit together, but no worries — this is a 20-year wine.     BUY »

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2007 Ethos Merlot, Columbia Valley
92 pts & Editors Choice - Wine Enthusiast (7/1/11)
Ripe, round, toasty and full-bodied, this is a style close to very high-end California Merlots costing two to three times as much. Black cherry, cassis, smoke, toast and coffee grounds dominate, but the seductive blend and the beautifully managed tannins keep the wine palate-friendly. Drink now or cellar for 6-8 years.     BUY »

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2008 Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot, Horse Heaven Hills
91 pts & Smart Buy - Wine Spectator (7/331/11)
Supple, ripe and generous, with a black pepper note weaving harmoniously through the focused black cherry and toast flavors that push through fine tannins on the refined finish.   BUY »
