This wine offers aromas of dark toast, toffee and cherry pipe tobacco with black currant, Rainier cherry, raspberry jam, sweet thyme and a whiff of caramel corn. There's a deft use of Syrah (11%) to sand down the tannin structure, allowing for an expression of Bing cherry, chocolate covered pomegranate and dark blueberries. The flash of green tea in the finish makes for a pleasing length.

Eric Degerman and Andy Perdue recently wrote an article highlighting affordable red wines featuring the Chateau Ste. Michelle 2013 Merlot, "This opens with aromas of dark toast, toffee and cherry pipe tobacco with black currant, Rainier cherry, raspberry jam, sweet thyme and a whiff of caramel corn. There’s a deft use of Syrah (11%) to sand down the tannin structure, allowing for an expression of Bing cherry, chocolate-covered pomegranate and dark blueberries. The 2012 Artist Series is about 70 percent cabernet, the balance merlot and cabernet franc. It’s big and juicy at the outset, its youthful plumpness marked by firm, plummy tannins. This needs some cellar time to shake off its baby fat. Then serve it with steak.
