Chateau Ste. Michelle 2011 Ethos Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

This latest Ethos was a pleasure. Oak char is balanced by a deep, creamy Cabernet flavor-cured tobacco, brambly blackberries, rosemary, dust. All those savory tones add perfect balance.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2013 Pinot Gris Columbia Valley

The stated stylistic approach to Pinot Gris by head winemaker Bob Bertheau is one that falls between the lighter Italian Pinot Grigio and the richer, rounder Pinot Gris from Alsace. This does that, starting with a floral nose of sweet herbs, pineapple, pear, Granny Smith apple and lime. There’s a nice pop of acidity on the inviting entry, which is followed by honeydew melon, Uncola, more apple and a finish of starfruit. Suggested fare includes Chicken Alfredo, halibut or scallops influenced by tarragon or anise.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2013 Horse Heaven Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Horse Heaven Hills

Best Buy! The Northwest’s most accessible example of Sauvignon Blanc excels in the hands of Australian winemaker Wendy Stuckey. She crafts it in an approachable, food-friendly style that starts with aromas of fresh-mowed grass, gooseberry, lime peel and kumquat. She manages the mouth feel of this high-acid variety with a program of 40% barrel fermentation in attenuated oak, allowing for a refreshing entry of Granny Smith apple, gooseberry, quince and slate. Enjoy with fare such as rosemary-rubbed chicken, halibut, mussels steamed with curry, Vietnamese pho laced with ginger or a fruit plate featuring chevre.

“Outstanding!”

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

Best Buy! Head red winemaker Ray McKee shines with this expansive and expressive Cab, a product of a tremendous vintage and his first trial with the new VitiSort optical sorter, which removes material other the grape (MOG). The blend of Canoe Ridge Estate, Cold Creek and Indian Wells set the table to create aromas akin to Hostess blackberry pie, Hershey’s with Almonds, cola nut, brown sugar and baking spices. A rich entry of black cherry, black currant and plum flavors comes with remarkable balance, length and a pinch of white pepper. It’s a classic Washington Cab that McKee’s boss — Bob Bertheau — enjoys with beef tenderloin or pasta.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2012 Merlot Columbia Valley

Pouring a deep garnet color the full nose of black fruit and candied cherry rises up from the glass. The upfront palate follows with plum, berries and cherry tailing off toward a finish that frames the fruity character with cooking spices such as nutmeg, clove and allspice.

Wine Press Northwest featured a great article about Chateau Ste. Michelle's latest wines, "Washington's largest, oldest winery continues to shine." "Running the Northwest's largest winery is daunting. Simultaneously crafting some of our region's best wines is downright difficult. That's what Chateau Ste. Michelle manages to do year after year, and its latest releases show no signs of cutting corners in quality as it continues to grow in size."

Review:
Best Buy! White wine specialist Wendy Stuckey does a masterful job with this new, wide-ranging and dry blend of Riesling (39%), Semillon (30%), Gewürztraminer (19%), Viognier (10%) and Chenin Blanc. The Riesling pops up early in the nose, which hints at jasmine green tea, apple blossom, pear, apple, gooseberry and mint. Unexpected acidity bursts onto the palate with Granny Smith apple, Asian pear and lemon/lime flavors, followed by a lick of lavender sorbet and finished with a dusting of white pepper and slate.

Review:
"While it’s just above the 'Best Buy' price range, Ste. Michelle doubled production and lowered the price of its Riesling off this historic vineyard from the 2012 vintage. Better yet, there’s been no drop in quality, having earned our top rating for the second straight vintage. Fascinating aromas of minerality, apricot, apple and white pepper don’t disappoint on the palate. There’s richness on the entry with delicious ripe pear and apple flavors, backed by river rock and finished with gorgeous juiciness that more than balances the residual sugar (2%). Ideal pairings would include Asian fare, crab, poultry or a fruit and cheese plate that includes Natural Viking Dill Garlic from the Washington State University Creamery"

Review:
"Bob Bertheau and his white winemaker, Wendy Stuckey, annually create this for their summer concert series, and this blend of Chenin Blanc (59%), Gewürztraminer (24%) and Riesling is a showstopper each day at the Woodinville tasting room. The influence of Gewürz shows immediately in the nose of orange oil, honeydew melon, rosewater and apple blossom. Bright flavors of pear and tangerine get an escort with an early burst of acidity that carries through to a finish of peach. The residual sugar sits just below 1%, which makes for a racy, fruity and refreshing drink."
