Syrah might be my favorite red variety – it proudly trumpets its terroir, and also responds to any technique orchestrated by the winemaker. 2017 Limited Release Royal Slope Malbec
The majority of this Malbec comes from Lawrence Vineyard (94%) and the balance from Indian Wells (6%). Lawrence Vineyards produces wines with intensity, long length and great focus. This Malbec has concentrated ripe blueberry and plum flavors, velvety tannins and just a hint of spice.

Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Artist Series red wine celebrates the inspired collaboration between artisan winemaking and fine art. The 2017 vintage labels showcase artist, Tony Angell. His interest in birds began in childhood and he has continued to work and rehabilitate wild species, including birds of prey, crows and ravens; “Of the many species we share the planet with birds may well provide the greatest inspiration to the inquiring human mind.” As central characters in our cultural myths, birds are the subjects of our artist expressions and the focus of scientific inquiry, “…their beauty, complex habits and behavior can give us pause, but it is their capacity to defy gravity that most often defies words to fully describe and explain.”
TASTING NOTES
2017 was a warmer vintage, but not hot for Washington state. Early bud-break and a relatively cool spring allowed for a nice, full growing season into October. Looking for the fresher, more complex wines, I found myself turning to our Canoe Ridge Estate vineyard. At 77% it is the largest this vineyard has ever been in the Artist Series; the site is maturing before our eyes, making the perfect combination of density and restraint. 13% from Dean Canyon Vineyard, is blended with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from Lawrence Vineyard (10%). This fruit brings color, weight and a touch of herb notes. This 25th anniversary vintage of Artist Series is going to be very special. Enjoy!”
